    • Nutrition and Special Diets

The amount of reliable, scientific nutrition information available to the public on the Internet is absolutely astonishing! In addition there are recipes for people with diabetes, celiac disease, high blood pressure, and food allergies. Some sites are listed both in this section and elsewhere.

Americal Diabetes Association They have loads of information on diet for diabetics, as well as recipes. I thought the Apple-Cranberry Streusel pie sounded particularly good.

Diabetic Gourmet This is a print magazine, with lots of interesting and helpful articles, and lots of recipes that sound really good.

Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network They have a lot of helpful information, as well as recipes for "a much requested milk-free, egg-free birthday cake and frosting recipes, and a recipe for chocolate candy." As near as I can tell, if you want more recipes, you must buy their cookbook.

Foods and Nutrition The folks at the University of Nebraska have been hard at work helping you. The list of their nutrition-related publications goes on and on, and it's all online.

Food Storage Information This information not only sounds boring, it is boring, but it may keep you and your family from food poisoning.

Health Finder The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has begun this wonderful website, which is in both Spanish and English. It has a wealth of reliable information to help with many health problems. For example, "hand-picked health information from A to Z - prevention & wellness, diseases & conditions, and alternative medicine - plus medical dictionaries, an encyclopedia, journals, and more. Selected health topics organized for men and women, by age from kids to seniors, by race and ethnicity, and for parents, caregivers, health professionals, and others. Information about doctors, dentists, public clinics, hospitals, long term care, nursing homes, health insurance, prescriptions, health fraud, Medicare, Medicaid, and medical privacy. Carefully selected health information Web sites from government agencies, clearinghouses, nonprofits, and universities."

Low Sodium Cooking This site shows you "how to give up sodium without giving up your life."

Merck Medical Information Merck has a good deal of reliable medical information for lay people on line, including information on nutrition and a number of medical problems.

Recipe Source They have recipes for special diets (baby food, diabetic, gluten free, vegetarian), and recipes for "camping, canning & preserving, cat treats & food, cooking for/with kids, copycat, crafts, dog food & treats, dutch oven cooking, extraterrestrial & bizzare, gift ideas, hair & skin products, hints & helpful information, food humor, medieval, microwave, mixes." Plus a marvellous selection of international recipes. Absolutely astonishing!

The Food Allergy Cookbook This cookbook has taste-good recipes the whole family will enjoy. And loads of testimonials, including this one: "The feedback we have received from our members to this new cookbook has been extremely positive. The recipes are easy to make, the menu ideas make planning meals easier for busy families and the main meals are a welcome addition. -- Anne Munoz-Furlong, Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN)"

The Pratt Family Cookbook Includes dairy-free recipes and allergy-free recipes. And a wonderful collection of sites with special Easter sections.

USDA Nutrient Content Tables Here you can enter any food ingredient (including many commercial food items) into the database and receive a detailed nutritional analysis. For example, I have seen ads saying we all should take a lutein supplement to protect our eyesight. Found out elsewhere that green, leafy vegetables are a good natural source of lutein. And I know that green and yellow vegetables are good sources of carotene. So how about carrots as a source of lutein? I wondered. I eat a lot of carrots. And now, thanks to the good people at USDA, I know that carrots are a good source of lutein. They are indeed, as Grandma said, "good for the eyes."
